My REbuild 5 years after my hasty LS1 install in my FC I am finally getting around to cleaning things up. I am moving the PCM into the passenger side compartment and moving the heater hoses to the passenger side. I decided I wanted all metal for the firewall heater hose connections. Here is a brief description of what has been done so far.(Having a metal lathe and milling machine made the task easier but it is doable with hand tools)
Fig_3.jpg shows the finished plumbing for the heater. 1/2 " copper tubing was used with 45 and 90 degree elbows to angle the plumbing in closer to the firewall. Fig_9.jpg shows the coupling used to join the tubing to the brass heater pipe. It has to have the threads reamed out to fit the pipe. Had to shave some metal off one end of the barbed fittings to fit the 45 degree coupling. Also cut a grove in the firewall side of the barbed fitting for the snap rings to secure the washers. Fig_8.jpg is a lousy pic of the barbed connections. I can take another picture if anyone wishes.
Fig_1.jpg shows the heater and plumbing in place. There is actually a good bit of room behind the A/C condenser. As long as the plumbing doesn't stick out past the A/C condenser mounting flange (red arrow in pic) you are ok.
Fig_2.jpg shows the firewall connections. I drilled 1 " holes and used 1 " rubber PCV grommets to run the connections through the firewall. Not shown in the pic are snap rings to hold the washers in place.
I filled the heater and plumbing with water and pressure tested the plumbing with one end of the tubing blocked off and barbed garden hose adapter clamped into the other. I bought what Seco Performance calls "1-1/4 valve cover grommets" to plug the old heater holes.
Most of the original firewall insulation will be re-used with spray on foam insulation applied where necessary. The holes drilled to the right of the heater lines are for 37 pin bulkhead connectors for the PCM. More on that later. |
