I've got nothing on the back of either alternator that looks anything like the black plastic item in your photo. Attached is a photo of the alternator I took off (which looks 100% identical to the new one now on the car... it's just too hard to photograph it right now).

The only thing I can read with numbers on it is an internal part which appears to be part of the beige plastic female connector seen in photo "alternator2". That number is 4353Y07J. I can't remove this beige plastic piece, but it's clearly internal, not external.

Am I missing a key part? Never having worked on an LS1 before, I wouldn't know if anything was supposed to be on the back of my alternator or not.

I have no white wire in an alternator plug... there are two male terminals in photo #2 (see above) but I can't see a wire going to it. There is nothing plugged into this connector...

humor ukv8fd.

the 2004 alternator is definitely self exciting. BUT. frijolee's did not initially charge, until we hooked the white wire to battery. now it charges without the white wire hooked up.

the self exciting regulator relies on residual magnetism in the coils. IMO, after a long time, that residual magnetism gets so low, that the alternator needs a "boost".

craig, i know that you have the white wire, because, the pic that you sent me, shows both the white & brown wires on the alternator plug. i am away, so i cannot call up that pic. until tomorrow.

bottom line. PM frijolee & ask him which of the two alternator terminals goes to battery. then connect it to the large alternator stud.

So... I'm not really missing part # D702se? There isn't some missing part which is supposed to be on the back of my alternator?

I'm willing to follow the suggestion of Danzan/UK but just want to make sure I understand what you are asking me to do:

I'm looking at the connector "plug" which is built into the side of the alternator (see second photo above), and can't see any kind of white wire (or any other color wire). So, I guess you mean a white wire coming from some connector which plugs into the alternator...except there isn't one. Dan, did we cut off something which plugged into the alternator? I can't locate any harness connector which has that shape....odd.

when i get home, i will send you your pic of the connector with the white & brown wire, that you sent to me some months ago.

this connector was not part of the harness, because it did not go to the PCM.

in any event, you do not need the connector. you only need a female spade lug to push onto the alternator terminal. you can get them at radio shaft.

sitting here at mammoth mountain, i do not remember which alternator terminal went to the white wire.

Yea, it looks like you're sitting at Mammoth... but you should be upright whenever possible... at least, that's the way I usually ski.

Will I blow anything up if I pick the wrong spade? I have a 50/50 guess, so I'm willing to try it as long as I won't fry the PCM or something else.

Ask and you shall receive

The reason I wanted you to try it, is that we have the same setupish apart from this wire, mine works, yours doesn't so until you try it you could be chasing your tail.
By the way this is a diagram of the connector not the alternator.

Hot damn!
Great idea from Danzan and our pal across the pond. Now, I show 14+ volts when the engine running, and it sounds more like an LS1. I connected the white wire to the battery terminal with a temporary wire, but I guess it does the same if I make a permanent connection to the alternator lug.

Thanks, again!

(Now, I just need to stop the speedo from picking up the tach signal!)
