The grannys write up on wiring is sort of unclear, is this correct? It says "The 99- and newer LS1 had proper control of the voltage regulator incorporated into the PCM. THe '98 LS1 PCM did not, and the circuit needs modification to prevent alternator damage." So, that means only 98 PCMs need the resistor?

i want to know about this! i keep seeing reference to a resistor, but i cant figure out what thats all about. like, if i use a complete pullout, why on earth would i need to sauder anything into the closed system? its GM wiring, alternater, and pcm.

because you dont have the fbody bcm and related components

On a '98 the regulator startup wire went through an alternator lamp to battery +. The 470 ohm resistor took the place of the alternator lamp.I understand that on later years the regulator startup voltage was supplied by the PCM and a seperate output to the lamp. The 470 ohm resistor is used for current limiting when the ignition is in the run position before the eingine is started.

ok so can we get a strait forward all inclusive answer- what year/model swap require this resistor, where does it go, and what happens without it? i know almost nothing about electronics. i for one have a '00 pullout. my voltage drops to 12.5V sometimes in the rain. other than that its a constant 14.5V. is this related?

The regulator is an electronic switching regulator. It needs battery voltage to operate to supply field current before the alternator starts generating voltage. That is the only purpose of the resistor on a '98. Without it the alternator won't have the initial field current. Once the alternator voltage is present the regulator runs from the alternator output. As I understand, from '99 up the regulator is supplied from the PCM. The alternator voltage should not drop below about 14.5 volts if the regulator is operating correctly. Last edited by RFERG43; 12-04-2007 at 07:28 AM..

| According to Dan, who has researched this issue extensively, you still need the resistor on the 99 and up as well. He explained why on swapcartech, but that site is no longer.
