| Anybody want to come help me smash my RX7 into little pieces with a bat? All are welcome. Bring sawzalls with metal cutting blades to chop the heads and turbo kit into little pieces also. Crank bolt (new, GM) broke while tightening (by hand, with a 16" socket wrench) nicely into the crank. I put it in 3 turns by hand, so I see no way it could have cross threaded. Apparently either the threads were shit on the bolt, or it was just defective. My bottom end is now garbage. Fuck that car.

You can get a short block for a few hundred bucks. Prob cheaper than any other option without dealing with a ton of headache. Then again.. I use things like this as an excuse to build things up stronger than they used to be. |

I could pull the crank, have it drilled and tapped (or helicoiled) but I'm not going to use a helicoiled crank. I have a spare crank, but it needs turned. If I pull the engine apart, I'm going to have to replace all the bearings, and have it honed anyway. At that point I might as well go forged rotating assembly (well, rods/pistons, crank is fine at my power level), as it would be a waste to rebuild it twice. I don't have 2500 dollars sitting around to spend on this car with the economy in the shitter. I've already spent ~15-18k dollars on this car, and it's currently a big shiny black paperweight, because a 5 dollar bolt failed. I've got no desire to into debt for an FC.

| I'd try to salvage it if you could. Try an easy out, if that doesn't work, maybe use that spare crank you have? You don't HAVE to do forged setup, and bearings/hone won't be too much i bet.

| On the topic of new bearings/hone on the current build... It's just not worth it to rebuild what I have without going forged, just no value there, since I'm going to do a forged motor eventually anyway. I think I might tap the smooth part of the crank snout and use a totally different bolt. I just need to do the math on the bolt size. This is at the very least, EXTREMELY annoying.

| man that sucks, sorry to hear. i really want to see you get the turbo setup running i would try an easy out bit, then clean up the threads if it comes out. if it wasnt cross threaded because you were able to thread it in by hand then it sounds like you had a weak bolt, i mean you werent even to the point of tightening it with a torq wrench yet. might not be too hard to get out. and as far as helicoils go, i wouldnt use that for somthing like this
