I have seen this happen before and a little work with a couple of bolt out kits and there were no more problems.

I'm going to drill the entire crank snout to 11/16 and run a 3/4-16 tap into it, which will thread it front to rear. Throw in a hardened Grade 8 bolt and it should be fine. If not, back to the sawzall...

I'm not sure how your bolt broke, but I have one of these and it worked to remove a bolt that i broke the head off of.

Order Here!

That sucks. Good luck with your repairs. I once threw a troublesome timing gear at my '57 Chevy. Left a perfect imprint and somehow made me feel better and oh so sick at the same time.

This thread showcases how it's the little things that wind up being the biggest challenge ... take a break, have a beer, then drill that b*tch out!

I've got the problem covered now.

A local gearhead mentioned the smooth bore on the crank snout...

I (will be, my drill motor chuck isn't large enough for the bit) be drilling the crank out to 11/16" and tapping it to 3/4-16 thread, and using a new, Grade 8 bolt for it. It's really suck a simple concept, I was just too pissed off before about the bolt failure to think straight about it.

So, 25 bucks in tools and a 8 dollar bolt and all is good.

I also had a talk with my crankshaft, and it now understands that if something like that happens again, I'm shipping it to Korea to be made into a KIA.

I would have just repaired the threads with a threaded insert such as a helicoil. They are often stronger than the threads they replaced.

The machinists I spoke to (performance shop guys) stated they absolutely will not helicoil a crankshaft. They didn't specify why however.

There are fine threads, tapped through more of the crank than factory, so by all things right and true, it should be stronger than the original.

my method would be a drill jig that slips over the crank tip (to keep the drill perfectly alligned) and a left handed drill bit that is just slightly smaller than the minor diameter of the threads. once you have a good size hole through the bolt it should come right out with an ez out. that is if the left hand drill bit doesnt back it out on its own.

if i had a bare crank laying around I could bust out a drill jig for you pretty easy, but i don't have one.

either way, don't let it get you down. make the bolt your bitch.
